18-year-old charged, accused in crash that killed pregnant woman in Racine

RACINE, Wis. (CBS 58) -- An 18-year-old Racine man is facing charges in connection to a crash that left an 18-year-old pregnant woman dead.

The crash happened Tuesday, Feb. 28, near Mead and 18th Streets in Racine. Authorities say upon arrival to the scene, officers found a heavily damaged SUV and two parked cars.

An 18-year-old woman in the backseat of the SUV was found unresponsive and pronounced dead at the scene.

Officials believed high speeds and alcohol played a role in the crash.

According to a criminal complaint, the victim was 27 weeks old at the time of the crash. Her baby did not survive.

The complaint says investigators interviewed another passenger that was inside the SUV at the time of the crash. He reportedly told officials 18-year-old Ramiro Baca was driving the SUV at a high rate of speed before the crash. The passenger also told officials Baca told him he had drank two beers before driving.

At the hospital, nurses tending to Baca's injuries reported he "reeked of booze." A blood test revealed Baca had a BAC of .136.

In an interview, Baca reportedly admitted to drinking beer before driving and said when he hit a pothole, he lost control of the vehicle and struck a parked car.

Baca has been charged with the following:

  • Knowingly operate motor vehicle without a valid license - causing death
  • Homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle
  • Homicide intoxicated use of vehicle - unborn child
  • Intoxicated use of a vehicle - great bodily harm
  • Operating while intoxicated causing injury - 1st offense (two counts)

Baca is due in court for a preliminary hearing on March 8.
