11 arrested in weekend Milwaukee County drunk driving patrol

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Eleven people were arrested for drunk driving over the weekend as part of a patrol by the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office.

Three of the 11 arrested were arrested for their second OWI. The patrol lasted from Friday at 4:00 p.m. through 6:00 a.m. on Monday.

According to the Sheriff's Office, two crashes on Sunday were caused by drunk drivers.

The first crash happened just before 8:00 p.m. on US-45 southbound near W. Capitol Drive and involved a pickup and a Nissan. Deputies say a 17-year-old had to be taken to an area hospital. The driver of the Nissan, a 28-year-old man, was arrested after deputies said they smelled alcohol on his breath. Deputies also said they found a loaded gun and several open intoxicants when searching the car. The driver was booked on charges of endangering safety by use of a dangerous weapon, OWI-1st causing injury, and was cited for reckless driving, failure to control vehicle, and no insurance.

A second crash happened on I-894 southbound at W. Lincoln Avenue when a Honda Civic hit a Subaru which then hit a Hyundai. Two 17-year-olds in the Honda had minor injuries and the driver of the Subaru was taken to the hospital for head pain. Deputies say they found empty beer bottles under the front seats of the Honda and could smell alcohol on the driver's breath. A 20-year-old Milwaukee man was arrested for OWI causing injury and was cited for inattentive driving. He told deputies he had two beers.
