Working smoke detector alerts family to late night fire

A family of three was alerted to a fire in their north side home by a working smoke detector late Saturday night.   According to the Milwaukee Fire Department, the residents  of a 1 ½ story wood frame home at N 88th Street and W Fiebrantz Avenue were alerted to the fire around 11:30 PM by a working smoke detector.  The male resident of the home was able to knock down much of the fire with an extinguisher prior to the Fire Department’s arrival.     No one was injured and the Red Cross was called to assist the two adults and a child displaced by the fire.  The fire was confined to a closet on the second floor of the home and damage is estimated at $10,000.   The  cause of the fire is being investigated.
