Transit union wants bus security firm to carry tazers, is it legal?

MILWAUKEE COUNTY -- In recent years there have been several highly publicized attacks on the Milwaukee County buses, some targeting drivers, others involving innocent passengers. The Local Transit Union is calling for tighter security but not everyone agrees.

Today in a private meeting the Transit Union tells CBS 58 it asked for a private security firm to have the option to upgrade from pepper spray to tazers saying 'pepper spray is not the answer.'

Rider Yvonne Garner says she sees the violence first hand, \"It's not safe, Milwaukee is not safe.\"

But she's not convinced upgrading to a tazer will work either, \"They're going to have to aim at 3 or 4 of them because that's how they fight, they don't fight one on one anymore.\"

We brought the issue to Firearm Attorney, Tom Grieve who says, \"Yes it should be legal.\"

But he says either option makes the county and tax payers vulnerable.

\"If someone gets hurt as a result and they should not have been hurt it could result in a lawsuit.\"

The Milwaukee County Transit system stands by its rides being safe.

Jacqueline Janz, spokeswoman says,\"The buses are very safe, in fact Milwaukee County did an audit and found 99.8% of all rides are incident free.\"

Still the transit system says the tazer conversation with the union is not over.
