Sources Say At Least 84 Dead in Nice Truck Attack

UPDATE: (CNN) A truck drove into a crowd at Bastille Day celebrations late Thursday in Nice, southern France, killing dozens of people.

UPDATE: (CNN)"Probably" 30 people were killed and 100 injured when a truck drove through a crowd on Bastille Day in Nice, France, a local prefecture official told CNN.

Christian Estrosi, the head of the regional council of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, said late Thursday: "Dear Nice residents, the driver of a truck appears to have caused tens of deaths. Stay for the moment in your homes. More info to come."
CNN affiliate BFM-TV reported that police and the truck occupants exchanged gunfire.
BFM posted an image of the truck that reportedly was involved in the incident. The photo shows what appears to be bullet holes in the windshield of the white truck.
Eric Dartell was eating at a restaurant on the street where the incident happened.
"You can see wreckage all along the way, a body, bicycles, street lamps and debris everywhere," he said.

ORIGINAL (CNN) The mayor of Nice, France, tweeted that a truck ran into a crowd on Bastille Day, killing multiple people.

Mayor Christian Estrosi said late Thursday that there are "tens of dead."
"Dear Nice residents, the driver of a truck appears to have caused tens of deaths. Stay for the moment in your homes. More info to come."
French media is reporting the truck occupants and police exchanged gun fire. 
Reports are as many as 30 killed and 100 injured in the attack.
