Secret Service investigating after man attempts to use $1,000 bill at Manitowoc convenience store

MANITOWOC, Wis. (CBS 58) -- The Secret Service is now involved with a counterfeit investigation in Manitowoc.

A man walked into a convenience store in the 1800 block of Washington Street and attempted to purchase cigarettes and lottery tickets with a $1,000 bill.

The bill appeared to be authentic and passed counterfeit tests, however, the person in possession of the bill did not have a reasonable/believable explanation for how he came into possession of the rare note.

The bill was taken to a local bank and it's authenticity could not be positively verified.

It is now being inspected by the Secret Service.

If anyone has had a reported theft of a $1,000 bill, they are asked to contact the Manitowoc Police Department to verify serial numbers.
