Safe, Fun Boating on The Open Waters This Holiday Weekend

Our waterways will become more like crowded highways this holiday weekend.  It's no wonder.  According to the National Marine Manufacturers Association, Wisconsin ranks seventh when it comes to boating popularity. During Wednesday's morning show, I thought it would be a good idea to speak with the Coast Guard about the "dos and don'ts" of boating on the open waters.

The experts will tell you wearing a life jacket is a must at all times.  It's reported drowning is the result of 76 percent of all fatal boating accidents.  And most of those people had no life preserver.  Also, don't drink and drive.  If you're caught, you could be fined both at the state and federal level.  It's also advised to take safety classes and get your boat inspected.  Perhaps one of the biggest tips is to make sure you attach your engine cut-off switch.  Basically, it's a way to cut the engine immediately.
