Nurses May Get More Responsibilities in VA Health Care

The Department of Veterans Affairs wants to give nurses with advanced training more responsibility.

Under amended regulations proposed last week, nurses would be allowed to order and read diagnostic tests, prescribe medicine, and give anesthesia. This would be done without doctor supervision.

The American Nurses Association says long-standing limits on what nurses with advanced training can do has harmed veterans.

The military, 21 states, and Washington D.C. already have full scope of practice laws for nurse practitioners.
