'Not a good feeling:' Hundreds protest Saturday against proposed ICE building on Milwaukee's north side
CBS 58 MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Standing in solidarity with immigrant communities.
That was the main message on Saturday morning as hundreds attended an "ICE out of Milwaukee" protest by Lake Park Dr. on the city's north side.
Many held signs and chanted for hours.
"All my family members generations before me fought in the second World War against this just kind of thing," said Janice Bury of Wauwatosa. "Including my mother, who was a nurse in the Philippines."
Besides ICE's presence in Milwaukee, protesters were also standing up to the very backdrop of the rally itself.
According to District 9 Alderwoman Larresa Taylor, the building at 11925 W Lake Park Dr. will be turned into some kind of ICE facility.
"Right away when I learned it was going to be an ICE facility, I right away said no we don't want a part of that in District 9," Ald. Taylor said. "District 9 hired me and they hired me to represent them and protect their interests and when the federal government tells me, hey, we're coming anyway even though you don't want us? That's not a good feeling."
The alderwoman said over the last year, they've held other similar protests since hearing the news.
"That's what it's really about, standing up for the rights of people," Ald. Taylor said. "We don't want a facility like this in our district or in our city that's going to divide people."
The protest was also led by members of the Socialism and Liberation Party and Voces de la Frontera.
It's unclear when the building will be operational, and officials said more protests could be planned in the future.
