Wisconsin officials urge caution for Independence Day drivers 🚙

MADISON, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Wisconsin Department of Transportation officials are urging drivers to exercise caution on the roads during the Fourth of July holiday weekend.

A press release issued on Wednesday, June 28 cited AAA in noting that a record number of Wisconsinites are expected to travel during this period.

WisDOT Secretary Craig Thompson emphasized the importance of safe driving, saying, "Drivers should plan ahead, be courteous, avoid distractions behind the wheel and drive sober. These steps can help save lives and prevent crashes on Wisconsin roadways."

Peak travel times are expected between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Friday, June 30, while on Tuesday, July 4, they are anticipated from noon to 3 p.m. and on Wednesday, July 5, from 3 to 6 p.m.

In Southeast Wisconsin, travelers should anticipate intermittent ramp and local street closures along I-43 in Milwaukee and Ozaukee counties, specifically between Glendale and Grafton. Lane closures on northbound and southbound I-43 in Milwaukee County are also expected. Three lanes will remain open in both directions on I-41/US 45 between Watertown Plank Road and Burleigh Street, though ramps at North Avenue will be closed. In Racine County, WIS 20 will be closed from WIS 36 to US 45 near Waterford, and a detour via WIS 36/WIS 83, WIS 11 and US 45 is in place. Furthermore, in Walworth County, single-lane closures are expected on US 12 between Lake Geneva and Elkhorn.

WisDOT advises drivers to buckle up, slow down and eliminate distractions such as texting while driving. Furthermore, drivers are encouraged to move over or slow down for emergency vehicles and to move vehicles out of traffic if involved in a crash, provided it's safe to do so.
