MILWUAKEE (CBS 58) -- Milwaukee's south side was bustling with people celebrating National Puerto Rican Day.
Organizers held a parade and then a festival at Mitchell Park.
People celebrated Puerto Rican culture with food, music, a salsa dancing competition and much more.
Puerto Rican Day parades have a long history, originating in New York City back in the 1950s.
It's since spread to other cities and today's, June 8, celebration was the first one in Milwaukee.
"Oh, this is fantastic! It's long overdue," said Publisher and Ceo of El Conquistador Latino Victor Huyke. " A lot of people when we started doing this, they were excited we were doing it in Mitchell Park. They feel like its part of the neighborhood."
Today was the festival's first year and organizers say people are already excited to hear about next year's celebration.
They say they're starting out slow but people can expect to see bigger and better parades in the future.
