Jackson Police Department issues internet scam alert

JACKSON, Wis. (CBS 58) – The Jackson Police Department is reminding residents to make sure they visit the right website when looking up contact phone numbers.

The department says a couple of residents were recently victimized in an internet scam. They say scammers are populating Google with their own phone numbers, pretending to be services like Amazon and Gmail. Then, when someone calls the number for customer service, the scammer, posing as a customer service agent, convinces the person to give up a credit card number or iTunes gift card as payment for help. They may also convince the person to give the agent access to their computer to “help” with the transaction.

The Jackson Police Department is reminding people to go to the company website for contact numbers, not to give anyone you don’t know access to your computer, and that no legitimate company takes payment with gift cards.
