Heat Awareness Day to help Wisconsinites brace for summer heat dangers 🥵
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) --Â As summer heat approaches, Wisconsin is bracing for the annual Heat Awareness Day on Wednesday, June 7.
The state of Wisconsin reported 14 heat-related deaths in 2022, as per the preliminary data from the Wisconsin Department of Health Services, with over 700 residents requiring emergency medical attention due to heat-related ailments.
In a press release on Thursday, June 1, DHS State Health Officer Paula Tran stated, "Extreme heat affects more Wisconsinites than any other natural disaster, and every single heat-related death is preventable."
Tran added, "Overnight temperatures are getting hotter across the state, making it tougher for those without access to air conditioning or cool basements to recover from hot days."
To reduce the risk during intense heat waves, especially among vulnerable individuals, the DHS and local partners have pledged to intensify their supportive efforts.
Wisconsinites are encouraged to pay close attention to local weather forecasts, find cool spaces, stay hydrated and be aware of early signs of heat-related illnesses to ensure safety during the hot season.
