MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Monday, Sept. 18 is National Voter Registration Day. It's not a national holiday, but some would argue it's pretty important. It was created only 11 years ago to emphasize how important it is for Americans to exercise their right, first to register and then to vote.

"When we don't vote, we are giving away our power," said Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson.

Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson spoke at a Voter Registration Day news conference at City Hall. In Milwaukee, when we want to highlight a cause or an issue or an ethnic group, you know what we do -- we turn it into a festival!

"Whatever your relationship is to voting, whether you're a future voter, whether you vote all the time or whether you aren't able to vote due to the many different barriers we see, we invite everyone to come out, it's free to participate," said Mayor Johnson.

Voting Registration Day events are as follows:

  • Good Hope Library and Mitchel Street Library Voting Carnivals, Tuesday, September 19, 4-6pm: Cast a ballot in a mock election, register to vote, and win prizes by answering election trivia questions
  • National Voter Registration Day Concert with Dead Horses, Tuesday, September 19, 6pm: No Studios, 1037 W McKinley Ave, Milwaukee, WI 53205. Free admission by checking one’s voter registration at the door!
  • Future Voter Fest, Wednesday, September 20, 4:30-6:00pm: La Plazita Parklet at 16th and Forest Home Ave. In the interest of appealing to youth to better understand the voting process, and by extension their families, this event will provide hands-on, engaging activities to provide youth with the idea that voting is a key responsibility in supporting our democracy.
