HARTLAND, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Credit card skimming costs banks and consumers around $1 billion each year.

Now, some local high school students are working with Landmark Credit Union to stop the stealing.

Seniors at Warhawk Manufacturing in Arrowhead Union High have spent months designing a prototype for a pin pad protector which would serve as another form of user security.

Within the next few weeks, that prototype will be created and sent out to Landmark Credit Union ATMs across that area.

"It's awesome, I'm really proud of what we've done here. I think the design aspect is really cool," said senior Gavin Dai. "It's an awesome opportunity, and it feels good that I am able to help contribute something to help people in the community."

Besides the protector, students in the shop also create other products out of wood and metal which they sell online here

The class will also hold a spring sale on May 31 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. where customers will get to see their creations in person.

Stay tuned for the full story on the protectors which will air on CBS 58 Sunday Morning in a couple weeks.
