RACINE COUNTY, Wis. (CBS 58) -- One person is dead and two other people are hurt following a crash in the Town of Burlington on Wednesday, March 18.

According to the Racine County Sheriff's Office, a Chevy Malibu was traveling northbound Pine Street -- near Schaal Road -- when it drifted into oncoming traffic. Officials say witnesses observed an SUV traveling southbound brake suddenly, swerve to miss the Malibu, but ended up colliding with it head-on at highway speeds.

The lone operator of the SUV, a 61-year-old woman from Burlington, was seriously hurt. She needed to be extricated from the vehicle because her legs were trapped. The woman was taken to the hospital for treatment.

The Malibu, according to the sheriff's office, was driven by 31-year-old Dakota Morand of Johnsburg, Illinois. His girlfriend was a passenger, identified as a 32-year-old woman from Kenosha. Officials say the woman sustained critical injuries and despite lifesaving efforts, she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Morand was treated for injuries and transported to a hospital for treatment.

It was determined Morand was impaired at the time of the crash and officials obtained a search warrant to conduct a blood draw that will be sent to the Wisconsin Crime Lab for analysis.

The following charges will be referred to the Racine County District Attorney's Office for review:

  • Homicide by intoxicated use of a motor vehicle
  • Operating while intoxicated causing great bodily harm
