MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) – An elderly man is recovering with serious injuries after he was he hit by a suspected drunk driver Monday night.
Milwaukee Police say a 70-year-old man was crossing the street at 11th and Atkinson around 8:15 p.m. Monday night when he was hit by a vehicle.
Witnesses tell CBS58 the driver was speeding and appeared not to brake before hitting the man.
The victim, who has not been identified, was taken to a local hospital with serious injuries.
The suspect was arrested on scene for suspicion of OWI.
Toranda Hill saw the crash happened and says the vehicle was speeding before it hit the man.
“I saw the man who he came out of the store with his cane and next thing I knew the man was crossing the street,” Hill said. “The car came around and he was kind of going pretty fast and he hit him and he flew up in the air and the man fell to the ground like he was dead.”
Antiane Means says when he arrived on scene he saw the aftermath of the crash.
“I seen a car with the windshield shattered and I seen an officer arresting the guy, put him in handcuffs,” Means said. “I seen a cane, a shoe and a hat in the streets.”
Milwaukee Police say this is an ongoing investigation, but the driver was arrested on suspicion of OWI.
No word yet on if the victim has been released from the hospital.
