Michigan Lawmakers Urge Rejection on Waukesha's Water Plan

Some Michigan lawmakers want to pull the plug on Waukesha's request to divert water from Lake Michigan.

A group of 11 lawmakers sent letters to the 8 governors of states bordering the great lakes urging them to reject Waukesha's plan.

Waukesha leaders said it needs to divert 8.2 million gallons of water per day from the Great Lakes and move away from well water systems.

In the letter, the lawmakers led by Republican Candice Miller and Democrat Debbie Dingell said "We firmly believe the approval of this request would threaten the precious, finite resources provided by our lakes. It takes all eight governors to approve the request for diversion. We ask that you use your vote to deny this request and protect all the great lakes states and their people."

The Great Lakes compact council will make the ultimate decision. They meet next on June 21.
