Voces de la Frontera criticizes Sheriff David Clarke's testimony on Capitol Hill

Just one day after Sheriff David Clarke was in Washington to testify to the House of Representatives Judiciary Committee about a new report published by the White House called the Final Report of the President's Task Force on 21st Century Policing, Voces De la Frontera issued a press release calling him a hypocrite.

The CBS 58 News at 4:30 p.m. had Voces Executive Director Christine Neumann-Ortiz as a live guest to explain. It's part of an effort to answer viewer requests for more unedited and in-depth discussions on local issues.

CBS 58 News is working with Sheriff Clarke's staff to provide him with the same opportunity.

At issue the Sheriff Office's work with Federal Immigration Agents.

Voces de la Frontera said in its release:

\"The report itself though has very clear recommendations for federal and local officials alike, echoing what community organizations have been saying for years: 'Law enforcement agencies should build relationships based on trust with immigrant communities,'reads the report. 'It is the view of this task force that whenever possible, state and local law enforcement should not be involved in immigration enforcement.'

'Heavy on federal involvement, federal control,' was the Sheriff's response to the report.\"

“It is hypocritical of Sheriff Clarke to toss about anti-government rhetoric while he collaborates whole-heartedly with ICE, regardless of the impact on immigrant communities and public safety,” said Neumann-Ortiz.

“We call on the Sheriff stop detaining immigrants just because ICE asks him to. It violates people's civil rights and makes everyone in our community less safe by making immigrants and their loved ones afraid to report crimes.”

Judge David Borowski is expected to issue his decision in Voces de la Frontera's open records lawsuit regarding Sheriff Clarke's work with ICE  on June 3rd.

Voces plans a rally on in front of the Milwaukee County Courthouse at 1:30 p.m.
