MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) – The Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office is looking into a sexual assault that happened Sunday, August 19th, at Humbolt Park.

The park is a popular spot for families with a playground and a beer garden.

It’s a site visited often by Richard Theil and his 2-year-old grandson.

He says another visitor clued him in on the disturbing news.

“She said you know what happened yesterday? A little boy was assaulted here in the bathroom at Humbolt park,” says Theil.

The park’s popular beer garden was open when the assault took place. The Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office confirms they got a report of a sexual assault but could not confirm the age of the victim.

“The hair on the back of my arm stood up,” says Theil. “It’s sad."

Parents say they’re shocked to hear the news but plan on continuing their visits.

“It’s sad to see because I grew up knowing about this park and it’s a beautiful area,” says Theil. “I still like coming here and we will keep coming here, but I will watch out more”.

The Sheriff’s Office says they have someone in custody.

“It makes it better that he’s not still at large,” says Chrissie Pappas, a frequent park visitor. “However, there are still people like that out there. I will still be super watchful”.

“Let’s hope and pray that this doesn’t happen again,” says Theil.

The Humbolt beer garden said they would be closed Monday on their Facebook page. Organizers say their closure has nothing to do with the unfortunate event but rather the weather.

The suspect has not been charged.
