EXCLUSIVE:Sheriff David Clarke Criticizes Milwaukee's Crime Plan and Answers to Speculation He Could Be Trump's Running Mate

Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke says he's tired of the vigils and events like Ceasefire Sabbath that  yield no real results when it comes to fighting crime in Milwaukee.

"I want to see a plan of action that hires more law enforcement officers," Sheriff Clarke said in a live interview on the CBS 58 News at 4. "A plan that puts these law enforcement officers in a position to succeed in keeping this community safe.  Until Tom Barrett commits to public safety short of lip service, this violence is going to continue."

The Sheriff likened treatment of repeat offenders to "catch and release."

He says the use of jails and prisons can be an effective crime prevention tool.

"We need to have a gut check in the criminal justice system. We're supposed to be on the side of law abiding people. I'm tired of this sympathy for criminals. This is not a hard thing to solve."

The Sheriff also acknowledged that he has talked with the Donald Trump campaign, but said he had no idea the source of an article in "Urban Milwaukee"  that strongly suggested he was a potential Vice Presidential Candidate for the GOP.

"I'm flattered, but I don't know where it comes from. I'd be honored to serve in a Donald Trump cabinet. I'd rather be in a policy making position." said the Sheriff.

The Sheriff is particularly interested in strategies for Homeland Security.

He would not give details on the substance of his conversations that he says he's had with the Trump people.
