MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Wisconsinites are starting to dust off their rods and reels as they prepare for the fishing opener on Saturday, May 4.

Though some might be traveling to the northern lakes in Wisconsin chasing the early season bite, those in Milwaukee shouldn't have to go far to get in on the action.

"You don't have to get out of the City of Milwaukee to go fishing, you can fish the rivers, you can fish those ponds, you can even fish the Lake Michigan shoreline," said Laura Schmidt, DNR Fisheries Biologist. "So, there's a lot of great local opportunities around here."

Recent studies have shown improved numbers of small mouth bass and Northern Pike in the Milwaukee River, and angler reports indicate that salmon fishing right from the shores of Lake Michigan.
