West Allis Police Officer shoots injured cat

WEST ALLIS -- Carol Hollman says on Monday afternoon she saw a cat hit by a car.

She stopped and put a blanket on the injured animal to offer it some comfort.

She then called police.

Hollman says once the officer arrived things got intense.

\"You don't call 911 for an animal,\" Hollman claims the officer told her. \"He said we shoot animals like this. This is for humans.\"

Carol says once she got back in her car, the officer took the cat to the side of the road and shot it.

Deputy Chief Robert Fletcher of the West Allis Police Department tells CBS 58 News that  \"Our policy does allow for that in order to limit the animal's suffering.\"

CBS 58's Josh Landon has more.
