MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Spring primary Election Day in Wisconsin kicks off the official start to a busy 2024 election year. Tuesday's ballots included key local races across the area.
Polls opened at 7 a.m. and will remain open until 8 p.m. Voter turnout was slow but steady, according to polling site officials.
"It's slow, of course, because it's not a major election. Not many contests on the ballot but it's been steady," said Linda Leaf, chief election inspector at Zablocki Library polling site.
This spring primary election will narrow the field for candidates running for school boards and city councils. For Milwaukee Common Council, there are spots on the ballot in the 11th, 5th and 7th districts.
There are also area school boards with primaries on the ballot and the Milwaukee mayoral race, with David King and Ieshuh Griffin running against incumbent Cavalier Johnson. There's also a mayoral race on the ballot in Kenosha.
Officials are reminding people to confirm their assigned polling site before heading to the polls.

The next major election will be the presidential primary election in April.
