Racine sailboat fire causes estimated $820,000 in total damage

RACINE, Wis. (CBS 58) -- The Racine Fire Department responded to a boat fire around 6:19 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 5.

The sailboat was docked at the Racine Riverside Marina. Fire companies arrived within four minutes to find the sailboat mostly extinguished in the cockpit area.

The fire extended to involve about half of the below-deck area and produced intense heat and smoke damage throughout the interior of the vessel. The fire was extinguished in about 15 minutes into the incident.

The fire was discovered by another boater at the Riverside Marina, Jon Brouilette. He called 911 and applied handheld fire extinguishers to the fire in the cockpit area before he disconnected the shore power electric lines to the vessel. The Racine Fire Department said his actions kept the fire from growing and involving the other vessels nearby.

The Racine Fire Department and Racine County Sheriff conducted an investigation into the origin and cause of the fire. Foul play is not suspected, but further investigation is required to determine the exact cause of the fire.

No one was hurt in this fire, and no other vessels were damaged.

The estimated damage of the vessel is $815,000. The estimated damage of the contents is $5,000, creating a total of about $820,000 in damage.
