Protests and encampment at UWM continue into 2nd week

 

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- The developments overseas have fueled protests on college campuses across the country, including right here in Wisconsin. Encampments in Milwaukee and Madison are entering their second week. 

Students at UWM on Monday, May 6, were chanting on and off saying, "Shame on you UWM!" They say they might not have had to camp out for so long if the administration listened to their demands. 

"We've been trying to have these talks for six, seven months. They said it was just a listening session and nothing happened. Quite literally they got up and laughed in our faces," said Audari Tamayo, co-chair Students for Democratic Society, UW-Milwaukee. 

Students like Audari Tamayo and Robby Knapp have camped out on UWM's campus for several days. 

"It's the first time in a long time where I felt like the community has really popped up and really started taking care of each other," said Knapp. 

Protesters say their message is reaching people far beyond the university. 

"For me, when I see the videos on Instagram and other social media, or the people of Gaza saying thank you to the student encampments, if that's the only thing that's accomplished, that would be enough," said Julie Roubik, community member. 

For UWM students, at this point in time, a possible ceasefire between Israel and Gaza is only one step on a long road. 

"Ceasing the dropping of bombs, ceasing the massacre that’s just one of the many things that needs to happen before Palestine is free," Tamayo said. 

With commencement ceremonies less than two weeks away, some are concerned the ongoing protest could affect those festivities. However, Knapp says this is an issue far greater than themselves. 

"Trust me I would love to get the diploma I’d love to get through that big life accomplishment," Knapp said. "Showing our solidarity against the genocide happening in Palestine for me is the biggest thing.”

Students at UWM are standing their ground. They say this won't be over until school officials listen to their demands.
