MILWAUKEE, WI (CBS 58) – Milwaukee Police officers peacefully ended an hours long standoff in the city’s northeast side. Police were on scene for more than six hours trying to negotiate with a woman making violent threats to her neighbors.

According to the Milwaukee Police Department, officers were called to the area of N 75th and Marine Drive on the west side of Northridge Lake around 11:20 AM after getting calls from residents saying their 52-year-old neighbor was making threats, and possibly had a gun. When police officers arrived, the woman threatened them too.

“Officers advanced up to the apartment to try and make contact with her again, at which time they were met with verbal threats that they were going to be shot if they continued to stand there,” Milwaukee Police Lieutenant Eric Donaldson said.

Police say the woman went back into her apartment, which sparked an about six hour long negotiation with officers trying to get her out. Leslie Lee lives near the apartment and says she could hear police from her window.

“Please come to the door, we are concerned, just want to make sure you’re OK. And they just keep saying that over and over again. It’s scary,” Resident Leslie Lee said.

Some residents in the area say that seeing officers in tactical gear surrounding their buildings was unnerving.

“I’ve seen at least 20 walking through there. Then I’ve seen a group of four or five with big heavy equipment, they all had their tactical gear on, helmets, everything,” Lee said.

Police say the woman was having a mental crisis and with the help of family, she came outside, and officers shot her in the leg with a bean bag. They say she’ll have a bruise on her leg, but that the standoff ended peacefully.

“It's a tense situation, we have family here and we want to do well for them,” Lt. Donaldson said. “We want to make sure no one gets hurt, us, this woman involved. No one wants that.”

The woman is in the hospital Sunday night, and then she’ll be transferred to the county's mental health facility. Lt. Donaldson said they will be presenting charges to the District Attorney, but ultimately they just want to her to get the help she needs.
