Car hits pedestrian during police chase in West Allis

WEST ALLIS, Wis. (CBS 58) -- A person crossing walking across West Bluemound Road in Milwaukee early Sunday morning was struck and injured by a vehicle being pursued by police.   The striking vehicle fled the scene and is still being sought by authorities.

The incident happened around 2 AM in the area of W Bluemound and N Hawley Roads.   According to a news release from the West Allis Police Department, the pedestrian was taken to a local hospital with what is described as serious injuries.

According to the release, early Sunday morning West Allis Police were notified of a vehicle that fled a traffic stop in Waukesha County.   Around 2 AM a West Allis Police officer spotted the suspect vehicle in the area of S 70th Street and the north city limits of West Allis.  

The officer attempted to stop the suspect vehicle, but it fled.   There was a short pursuit eastbound on Bluemound Road.   At one point, the fleeing vehicle swerved head-on into the path of a westbound Milwaukee County Sheriff’s squad.   The vehicle missed the squad and as it swerved back into its lane of traffic it stuck a pedestrian crossing the street near N Hawley  and W Bluemound Road.  The West Allis officer stopped his pursuit to render aid to the injured pedestrian.

The fleeing vehicle did not stop, continuing eastbound on Bluemound.  The vehicle has not been located.

The Milwaukee Police were called and are investigating the hit and run crash.
