Multiple felony charges revealed against suspect in Elkhorn sports bar homicides

NOW: Multiple felony charges revealed against suspect in Elkhorn sports bar homicides

Update:

A criminal complaint filed by the District Attorney clarifies the charges against Routt. He faces five felony counts:

  • Two counts first-degree intentional homicide
  • One count attempted first-degree intentional homicide
  • One count armed robbery
  • One count possession of a firearm by a felon

The jail records cited below did not and do not distinguish the attempted homicide charge from the others, making it appear as though Routt faces three counts of first-degree intentional homicide.

Original:

ELKHORN, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Preliminary charges have been revealed against a man accused of killing at least two people at an Elkhorn sports bar on Feb. 1.

Fifty-seven-year-old Thomas Routt is now accused of killing Gina and Emerson Weingart.

The Walworth County district attorney has yet to officially file the charges against Routt, but the jail website now lists what he's being held for.

Gina and Emerson Weingart were killed that night, but Routt is being held on three counts of first-degree intentional homicide, not two.

He's also facing one count of armed robbery and another count of possession of a firearm by a felon.

All five charges are felonies.

Routt was arrested on Feb. 5 after police said they developed a lead identifying him as a person of interest.

But further information from the Elkhorn Police Department has been scarce ever since the investigation began.

Milwaukee attorney Russell Jones has told us he is representing Routt, but Thursday evening Jones did not return messages asking about the charges.

Previously, Jones told us Routt claims he was not involved in the murders, and that he maintains his innocence.

The Walworth County District Attorney also did not respond to questions about the charges.
