Man charged in Cinco de Mayo shooting that injured Milwaukee police officer

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- A 26-year-old Milwaukee man has been charged in connection with a shooting that injured a police officer on Cinco de Mayo.

Milwaukee police officers were called to the scene when a suspect fired shots in the area, subsequently striking an officer.

Officers reportedly did not return fire and no one else was struck.

The officer, a 29-year-old male with over one year of service, was transported to a local hospital for treatment of non-fatal injuries.

According to a criminal complaint, surveillance video from the incident led police to Mark Courtney. Courtney was allegedly seen walking away from the scene at a fast pace and was carrying a handgun. 

Courtney, according to the complaint, allegedly told officers he was a CCW permit holder and he had just fired his firearm. 

According to the complaint, during an interview with Courtney, he admitted to getting in a conflict with another person at the time of the incident. He claimed the man left and then returned armed with a firearm. Courtney told officials, according to the complaint, he fired four shots toward the man to defend himself. 

Courtney allegedly apologized for shooting and injuring the officer but claimed he acted in self-defense. 

Courtney has been charged with first-degree reckless injury, use of a dangerous weapon, and first degree recklessly endangering safety, use of a dangerous weapon. 

In court on Thursday, May 9, Courtney's bond was set at $50,000. 

He's due back in court on May 20.
