MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) – This year's fifth and final teacher of the year is a bilingual counselor from Milwaukee Public Schools.
On Thursday, Ana Báez learned she was selected as the fifth 2024-25 Teacher of the Year by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction.
"So, this is probably the first time I've ever been surprised in my life. Good job!" Báez said after receiving the award.
South Division High School is the state's largest bilingual high school and for over a decade, Baez has made an impact by bridging the gap between English and Spanish.
"I see myself in these students. I am these students. They are me, and so their success is my own," she said.
Báez, an MPS graduate, was presented the honor by the state superintendent of public instruction.
"Your energy and dedication are off the charts," Dr. Jill Underly said to Báez.
Underly said it is fitting that Báez received this honor during Teacher Appreciation Week.
"Every teacher, day in and day out, does their job. We're here for the kids, for the students, and to get that extra recognition is really important and just wonderful, to celebrate the teachers who've made so many impacts in our lives," she said.
With her new title, Báez will be appointed to the Wisconsin Teacher of the Year council for five years. In the meantime, she plans to continue being a support system for students.
"It feels empowering. Humbling. Just amazing," she said.
