BROOKFIELD, Wis. (CBS 58) -- February is all about listening to your heart. The American Heart Association (AHA) uses this month to bring awareness to risk factors like high blood pressure.

"It's a silent killer," said Garrett Van Auken a personal trainer with LIFETIME in Brookfield. "My dad had a massive heart attack, he's still with us today, thankfully. You just never know."

The AHA says focusing on exercise and diet can help prevent heart disease and other cardiovascular problems.

Van Auken helps people with all skill levels achieve that health goal.

"Not everyone has the same goal. They don't always want to look big and bulky and what not. Some people just want to move," said Van Auken. "Everything we do in the gym should benefit us outside of the gym."

He also helps people with diet concerns. But if you're just looking for a healthy meal, he says protein shakes and avocado toast are two good options.

The American Heart Association recommends healthy proteins and whole grains as two of the top heart-healthy foods.
