Female Orangutan Joins Milwaukee County Zoo

The Milwaukee County Zoo is welcoming a new adult orangutan to their Primates of the World Exhibit.

A 11-year-old orangutan was welcomed on Tuesday.

Rayma came to Milwaukee from the Topeka Zoo.

Zookeepers say she's curious and likes standing on top of the large enrichment items provided by zoo staff.

She was brought in to keep the male orangutan company after the unexpected death of the zoo's female orangutan, MJ last September.

"Tommy here, our existing orangutan he was alone basically throughout the winter so we wanted to get him a companion, somebody that he could interact with and pal around with,” said a representative for the zoo.

Zookeepers say Rayma and Tommy are getting along well.

They've been playing, grooming and even sharing food together.
