29-year-old faces multiple charges after fatal crash into MCTS bus

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Details have emerged from a criminal complaint filed in Milwaukee County Circuit Court about a fatal collision involving a car and a Milwaukee County Transit System bus that resulted in one death and another person in critical condition.

The crash, occurring near the intersection of 35th and Wisconsin Ave. on Saturday, April 20 at around 9:30 p.m., also injured several others, according to the complaint.

Danny Romero, 29 from Milwaukee, faces charges including second-degree reckless homicide, as well as multiple counts of causing great bodily harm, reckless injury and recklessly endangering safety.

According to the complaint, Romero was driving a Hyundai Santa Fe that struck the bus while he was driving with a suspended license at what is believed to be a high rate of speed.

MPD traffic camera footage reportedly shows the car driving at a high rate of speed before running red lights at 35th adn Wells and 35th and Wisconsin before hitting the bus.

The crash left passenger Michael Captain dead and another passenger in critical condition with severe head injuries.

Other victims reportedly sustained injuries on the bus, including one person who suffered two broken ribs and a lung injury, another with head trauma and leg injuries, as well as someone with knee pain. Three other passengers on the bus also reportedly experienced injuries of varying degrees.

Romero faces a total of 11 charges, with many including additional penalties due to his status as a habitual criminal.

His preliminary court appearance will be Tuesday, May 7.
