Police fatally shoot man in Madison

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- One person has died in an officer-involved shooting in Madison.

Police responded to the west side shortly after 9 p.m. Sunday on a report of a man outside firing a gun. Chief Vic Wahl says the 63-year-old man fired at officers when they arrived and was shot. He was taken to the hospital where he died.

The state Division of Criminal Investigation is handling the case.

Madison Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway released the following statement on the shooting: 

"I appreciate the danger that our officers face every single day, and we are fortunate this incident was not worse. The loss of life is always tragic. This situation is under investigation by Wisconsin Department of Justice's Division of Criminal Investigation, which is a fully independent process. I respect the integrity of the investigative process, and await their report on this incident."
