MILWAUKEE, WI (CBS 58) – Sixteenth Street Clinic along with local businesses and organizations are kicking off their mask campaign.

People were handed envelopes with at least 3 disposable masks along Cesar Chavez Drive. Business owners along the strip say they’re proud to be a part of an actively safe initiative.

The Campaign is called Cuidate MKE which translates to Stay Safe Milwaukee.

It’s a partnership between Sixteen Street Community Health Center, Rebel Wipes, UCC, South Organizing Committee, and Mask up MKE.

With a spike in COVID-19 cases in the city’s south side, the clinic felt the need to help provide masks for the community and help them stay safe.

Business owners say it helps keep their establishments safe for both employees and customers.

Each day they plan on giving away a couple hundred masks.

Participating businesses will also have a box in their establishments to handout.

“Something is getting done,” says Carmen Alello, business owner along Cesar Chavez Drive. “Something on the ground level is getting done. We can go door-to-door and ask people to be one cohesive page, one cohesive message, and that everybody on the street; the owners, the employees and now the customers will all get this. We’re going to do something about this.”

“I think overall people want to be safe and healthy and take care of their families,” says Caroline Gomez-Tom, spokesperson for Sixteenth Street Community Health Center. “It’s just a matter of having access to the masks.”

The initiative reminds people to wear masks, wash their hands, and maintain those six feet of distance from others.

The clinic also continues to offer day of appointments for COVID-19 testing. You can contact their offices here.
