14-month-old victim of alleged child abuse

A 14-month-old boy is in serious condition today as the Milwaukee Police investigate a report of aggravated child abuse. The child was taken to a local hospital where he is currently being treated.

The abuse was reported by the child’s grandmother around 8 PM Monday. Investigators were concentrating on a house in the area of N 36th and W Hadley Streets.

Neighbors in the area said they're shocked someone would hurt a child.

\"As a mother, I have a two year old daughter and I just couldn't imagine something to harm her and even my older kids. It's just really disturbing to know something like this is happening,\" said Victoria, neighbor.

According to the MPD, the father of the boy, a 28-year-old Milwaukee man, was arrested at the scene and is suspected of the abuse. He has not been charged yet.

Police say the mother of the child was not present at the time of the alleged abuse.   The case will be reviewed by the Milwaukee County District Attorney’s office later this week, while the MPD’s Sensitive Crimes Division and Metropolitan Division continues their investigation.

Last year, the Children's Hospital of Wisconsin Child Advocacy and Protection Services saw between 6,500 -7,000 children. This year alone, they've seen 196 cases of potential abuse.
