Scam Websites Target Packers Fans

CBS 58—A warning for Packers fans who are looking to buy some green and gold gear: there are several counterfeit websites scamming people.

Megan Heikkinen lives in Green Bay and was looking for an Aaron Rodgers jersey and stumbled cross a site advertising jerseys for about $20.

“The website was set up great, the pictures of the products were very clear, great descriptions,” Heikkinen.

However Megan says the extremely low prices were a red flag.

“Prior to making any purchases I called the Better Business Bureau because I just had a hunch because it seemed too good to be true.”

And it was. The website is one of thousands of fake NFL merchandise sites. But how can you tell? Here is some advice from the Better Business Bureau. Look at the URL- it should start with HTTPS- the “S” stands for secure. And at the bottom of the page, if it says it’s accredited by the BBB- click on the BBB logo. It should take you to the BBB review of the company. If it doesn’t, it’s a scam.

“Knowing that they had the BBB logo at the bottom, saying they're certified through that, that was like the scariest part,” Heikkinen said.

You should also read the sites privacy policy and frequently asked questions. Often times the writing doesn’t make sense. The BBB says a lot of these sites are based overseas, many in China.

“Be aware online, you never know what is legitimate out there,” Heikkinen said. “So better to be safe than sorry.”

If you have any doubts, check with the BBB before making a purchase. You can find more information by clicking here.
