Victim Upset After Suspect in Carjackings, Shootings Gets Out on Bond

CBS 58-- A 17-year-old charged in a four day crime spree is out on bond.

Avan Kittler is a suspect in several crimes, including a triple shooting, three carjackings and robberies. A judge set Kittler's bond at $10,000 cash.

Now one of the victim’s, Elizabeth Gehrke, who was carjacked in a bump and run while her baby was inside, feels like a victim all over again.

“Scared, angry, nervous I guess,” Gehrke said about she feels with Kittler out of jail. “Is he actually gonna stay? Is he gonna run and then we won't see him? Will there be any justice served because of it?”

Gehrke’s infant son was not hurt in the carjacking. The suspects left him on the sidewalk after driving a few blocks.

Kittler faces seven felonies and 215 years in prison. He and another man, Matthew Long, are accused of several carjackings, robberies and shootings.

As a condition of his bond, Kittler is on electronic monitoring, cannot possess any weapons or contact any victims. But that does little to ease Gehrke's mind.

“That doesn't mean anything to me,” she said. “If he went on a four day spree of crime, I don't think he's the type of person that really cares what the law is going to say.”

Gehrke says she is doing her best to move forward, but she can't help always looking over her shoulder.

“I'm super cautious while I'm driving,” Gehrke said. “I'm so paranoid. All I do is stare at cars around me, I don't like stop signs or lights because I'm afraid someone's going to come up and hit me again.”

And with a rash of carjackings in recent months, she feels what's happened in her case so far sends the wrong message.

“It's not uncommon and it just seems to be getting worse and worse and I think that's because look at my situation,” Gehrke said. “He's now out on bail. You arrest them and you let them go.”

Long is still in jail on a $20,000 cash bond.
