Interfaith Meditation Room At MKE Closer

The stress of air traveling can be overwhelming for a lot of travelers. But one local non-profit is in the final stages of taking out some of the stress before your next flights out of Milwaukee.

By years end, there will be an area in the walkway between the parking garage and terminal, where travelers will have a dedicated space to pray or meditate and reflect.

The project has been in the works since 2009.

Its called the Interfaith Airport Meditation Room of Milwaukee. General Mitchell currently does not have a place of worship in the airport, like many others do.

The non-profit has worked with county administrators including the airport for several years and found the space to be convenient for travelers who want a place to take a break from the hustle and bustle of the airport.

The group has raised about $100,000 of their $130,000 need to construct the space.

Ruth Agrusa, the chair board for the project told me, the room will be open to everyone regardless of religion.

But that doesn’t mean it will not be a religious or sacred spot.

"In the future, we hope to have scheduled religious services. And at that point, any religious symbols would come out and then would be put back," said Agrusa.

"As a Muslim I have five times to pray, once it's time to pray I have to pray. So this is a very good place to pray and to do my religion," said Abdellahim Elshakra, who stopped to pray in the area on Wednesday.

The final design still need to be approved but construction is expected to begin later this summer.
