Wisconsin DOT Receives Award for Managing Highways

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation was recently recognized by the American Concrete Pavement Association (ACPA) for the department’s proactive steps to manage its highway pavement network. WisDOT Secretary Mark Gottlieb accepted ACPA’s “Harold Halm Presidential Award” during the Wisconsin Concrete Pavement Association’s annual workshop February 11 in Madison.

“For more than 50 years, WisDOT has proactively managed their pavement network,” stated Gerald F. Voigt, P.E., ACPA President and CEO. “Their policies have resulted in some of the highest quality pavements and one of the most well-maintained pavement networks in the United States.”

WisDOT is responsible to oversee a multi-modal transportation system that includes approximately 11,800 miles of state, federal and Interstate highways—along with airports, harbors, public transit systems, bicycle and pedestrian facilities. The ACPA award recognizes WisDOT for its “long-standing life-cycle cost and pavement-type selection policies” that “look beyond expedient choices and toward the prudent ones.”

“At WisDOT, we emphasize the preservation and wise management of our existing transportation system, but we must share this award with all our public and private partners who help us design, construct and maintain that system,” Secretary Gottlieb said. “We continue to implement innovative technologies and policies to get the most from current resources, but also look to state and federal policymakers for sustainable solutions to address growing transportation needs.”

The ACPA’s Harold Halm Presidential Award has been awarded selectively since 1994 to an individual or organization for “distinguished achievement.” The award is named in honor of the first president of the ACPA who served from 1964 until his death in 1985.
