Reds send OF Gomes to Nationals

CINCINNATI (AP) -- The Reds traded struggling outfielder Jonny
Gomes to Washington for two minor leaguers, then called up Yonder
Alonso to take his spot on the roster.

Gomes was part of the Reds' surge to the NL Central title last
season, but slumped badly this year. He's batting .211 with 11
homers and 31 RBIs.

The Reds obtained left-hander Chris Manno and outfielder Bill
Rhinehart from Washington. The Reds included cash in the deal to
pay for Gomes' salary.

Alonso was the seventh overall pick in the June 2008 draft. The
career first baseman has been moved to the outfield in the minors.
