Olympic silver medalist from West Allis announces her retirement
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- Chellsie Memmel is done with competitive gymnastics, this time for good.
The three-time world champion and Olympic silver medalist from West Allis, Wis., announced her retirement Wednesday. She had attempted another comeback before the London Olympics following a series of injuries, but failed to make it past the qualifier for the U.S. championships. The 24-year-old ends her career with six world medals, including the 2005 all-around gold and 2003 team title, the first ever for the U.S. women. Memmel says it's "sad" to be "officially done" with gymnastics, but she's eager to try new things. She's begun the process to become a gymnastics judge, and might do some coaching. She's also looking forward to going to school, and is planning an Aug. 31 wedding. |
