Badgers Seniors Named To Major Award Watch Lists
MADISON, Wis.-- Senior leaders on offense and defense represent the Wisconsin Badgers on preseason watch lists for a pair of major awards.
Senior running back James White was nated to the watch list for the Maxwell Award, presented annually to the national player of the year. Senior line backer Chirs Borland is a preseason candidate for the Bednarik Award, which is given to the nation's top defensive player.
Both the lists were announced Monday by the Maxwell Football Club. The Maxwell award is in its 77th year, while the Bednarik award is on its 19th year.
White, a senior, enters the season as the nation's second-leading rusher among running backs owning 2,571 career rushing yards in his first three seasons at Madison. White is also a 1,000-yard rusher as a freshman in 2010, has nine career 100-yard games, and enters the season ranked 12th in UW history for total yardage. He played in all 14 games last season and finished with 12 touchdowns.
Borland heads into his final year at UW as the focal point of the Badgers' defense. He was a first-team All-Big Ten pick each of the last two seasons, and has make the watch list for the second-straight season for the Bednarik award. Borland had 13 forced fumbles in his career, and needs just one more to match the Big Ten record and all-time FBS of 14. Borland begins his senior season ranked 19th all-time at UW with 308 total tackles.
