MILWAUKEE (CBS-58) ---A 27-year-old man is dead this morning following a high-speed, wrong-way vehicle crash on South 27th Street near W Cleveland Avenue in Milwaukee.

According to the Milwaukee Police, around 6 AM, a 2005 Acura TL driven by a 21-year-old man was northbound in the southbound lane of S 27th Street when it collided head-on with a southbound 2013 Hyundai Elantra.  The 27-year-old victim was a passenger in the Elantra, and according to the Milwaukee County Medical Examiner's Office, died at the scene of the accident.

The family of the victim said he was on the way to work. They describe him as a hard working man who cared for his family. The identity of the victim has not been released officially by police.

Police say the driver of the Acura was traveling at a high rate of speed. Near S. 27th and Cleveland the speed limit is 35 miles an hour. People in the area said they see drivers going well above the limit.

"Everybody needs to slow down coming through here. It's 35 miles and hour, it's not a freeway," said Jenny Avery.

The Elantra was driven by a 37-year-old man who was taken to a local hospital with  serious injuries. The 21-year-old wrong-way driver, who was alone in his vehicle, was also taken to a local hospital with serious injuries.

The MPD has placed the 21-year-old man in custody and charges against him are expected to be presented to the Milwaukee County District Attorney's Office.
