Traffic Alert: DOT to close ramp as part of Zoo Interchange project

Parts of the Zoo Interchange will shut down this weekend, causing problems for some drivers trying to get in and out of Milwaukee.

Starting late Friday night, the DOT will close the I-894/US 45 North to I-94 East ramp. It will re-open by 6 a.m. Sunday.

Big, digital signs are posted along the way to alert drivers to the impending inconvenience.

Traffic delays are expected as folks travel to events like Bastille Days or Indy Fest at State Fair Park.

Michael Pyritz with WisDOT said it's rare to have a ramp closed for such a long period of time, but doing so is a key component to moving the Zoo Interchange Project forward.

\"They're going to see a lot of work going on with some of the retaining walls and there's some paving work will be taking place that's going to create a new area where the road will switch to,\" he said. \"We're looking toward the end of July to have that switch take place.\"

There will also be other overnight closures throughout the Zoo Interchange this weekend. Drivers are encouraged to give themselves extra time and follow posted detours.

To get around the closure, motorists should utilize:
• I-894/US 45 North exit ramp to Greenfield Avenue to 84th Street to I-94 East
• I-894 bypass or I-43 to other regional east routes

All closures are weather dependent. You can learn more about on the construction project here.
