MILWAUKEE-- Milwaukee Public Schools held a district wide recruitment event Saturday,

More than a thousand people showed up to fill the 700 open slots.

MPS has a growing number of openings due to a three year wave of retirements.

Many of the people who walked into the event at Vincent High School hoping to land a job will probably walk out with one.

Among the hopefuls were recent college graduates looking for their first teaching position.

Some applicants were interviewed and offered a position right on the spot.

In fact, MPS has some open positions for this year so some new teachers will start next week.

The district has tried to sweeten the pot to interest applicants including adding extra time to meet residency requirements and increasing the base salary to $41,000.

The search to fill the 700 open positions isn't over yet.

There is still time to apply for open positions.
