Residency battle in Milwaukee going to the courts
MILWAUKEE- The battle over the residency law in Milwaukee is now going to the courts.
Late Wednesday the Milwaukee Police Association filed a suit against the city asking a judge for a temporary restraining order that would make Milwaukee comply with a residency law.
This all comes after Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett and the common council defied the state by passing a resolution last week to ignore the law based on home rule and file suit challenging it.
Barrett wants to maintain Milwaukee's 75-year-old residency requirement for public-sector employees.
Barrett maintains the law violates the Wisconsin constitution.
