UPDATE: Search called off for missing man in Lake Michigan near Kenosha lighthouse
KENOSHA -- The Coast Guard and the Kenosha Fire Department has called of its serach for a man who went missing near the Kenosha Lighthouse Monday evening.
Dive and rescue teams in Kenosha were called out to Lake Michigan near the North Pier around 6:00 p.m.
Authorities determined three people had jumped into the water. Two of the people were able to get out before crews arrived.
Benjamin McCarter, 31, was struggling against the current and couldn't get out of the water.
He went under the water and hasn't been seen since.
Both rescue teams and bystanders in Kenosha know how dangerous the area can be with an undertow and Monday's choppy conditions.
The Kenosha fire department was forced to call their part of the search as soon the sun went down.
They said they were turning things over to the coast guard Tuesday. The Coast Guard says that they've exhausted all efforts and won't continue to search for McCarter.
