MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Puerto Rico remains devastated a month after Hurricane Maria ripped through the island. A local family with ties to the Island are trying to do what they can to help. The Knope’s have family and friends in Puerto Rico who are still picking up the pieces after the Hurricane. So they decided to throw a fundraiser. They called it “Americans Helping Americans.” It was held at Three Lions Pub in Shorewood last weekend.
Dozens of people stopped by and grabbed a drink, knowing that the money they spent will be used for a good cause.
Jason and Wilda Knopes started organizing the event weeks ago.
“People are still one month in and not getting water. Still 90 percent of people don’t have power. Still half the people don’t have water. Even those who have water, they have a boil advisory. Less than half the cell towers are up. A lot of people see the numbers, and those numbers are all in the major areas and the rest of the island is still in the emergency stage," said Jason Knopes.
